Upcoming Twig Events

Our monthly twig events, on the fourth Wednesday of the month (occasionally the fourth Thursday), alternate between in person and virtual and are usually at 6:30 p.m. We also plan the occasional coffee social on a Saturday.

Our first in-person coffee social of the year! Following the appeal and success of an in-person coffee social that we held last fall in Kitchener, we would like to hold another — in Cambridge this time.

Our first virtual book club event of the year! The book under discussion will be The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction by Amy J. Schneider. More details and zoom meeting link to come closer to the date!

We would like to arrange an in-person coffee social for our members who may find the London area more convenient than the KWG area. Current thoughts are for late March or early April.

The 2024 Editors Canada conference will be in Vancouver, June 23–23. Registration opens in February, so keep an eye out for an email from the national office!

Award nominations

The applications period for the 2024 Claudette Upton Scholarship is open. This annual national award of $1,000 recognizes a promising student affiliate from Editors Canada. Twig News

The KWG twig is looking forward to an exciting November! We have two in-person socials planned for this month: a mid-month coffee meet-and-greet and our regular end-of-month dinner social, both in Kitchener.

These will be the last twig events for 2023. We hope to see you at one or both of them!

November event: Coffee social in Kitchener

It’s a new month and time for a new event from the Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph twig!

We’re hosting a meetup over coffee in downtown Kitchener next week, and everyone is welcome.

Welcome to our newest member: Shirley Rennie!

The KWG twig had an exciting September! On Sunday, September 10, we participated in the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival, where we had the chance to meet lots of authors, editors, and aspiring editors. Thank you to Jolanta, Judy, Maggie, Serenity, and Victoria for helping make this event a success!

We held our first in-person dinner social on Wednesday, September 27. It was great to reconnect with members and to meet new and prospective members!

  • Wednesday, October 25: Our online book club is back! We will meet via Zoom to discuss Toxic Feedback: Helping Writers Survive and Thrive by Joni B. Cole. We had a great turnout at the end-of-year social in June! We’ll be taking a break in July and August and starting things up again in September with Lloyd Winfield joining Amanda Feeney as co-chair.

Upcoming Twig Events

  • Sunday, September 10: Eden Mills Writers Festival. The KWG twig has booked a table at the festival again this year, and we need some member volunteers to help us run it. The festival is a great place to meet authors and other editors (and to hand out business cards)! Volunteers will help run the table for an hour or two and then they’ll be free to spend the rest of the day enjoying the festival! Editors Canada Editing Essentials Test

New Website

KWG Twig News — October 2022

We’ve had a busy fall in 2022! Here we recap some past events and invite you to join us for upcoming ones.

Past Events 

(1) Last month, the KWG twig hosted a table at the Eden Mills Writers Festival, and we were able to talk to many authors and aspiring authors, as well as several attendees who were interested in becoming editors. It was a fantastic day to talk about books with other people who love books. Thank you to the volunteers (@IndieEditor, @BleedingPenEdit, @KWCopyeditor) who helped make it a successful day for our twig!

(2) And thanks to everyone who made it out to our September Guelph social at Beertown. There were members we hadn’t seen in a while, new members, and potential members at the table and we chatted on the patio until they turned the heaters off.

Upcoming Twig Events

(1) Our upcoming social will be held at Borealis Bar and Grill in Kitchener on October 26, 2022, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. More details to come soon.

(2) And book club is back! Our meeting on Wednesday, November 30, will be a virtual book club discussion. The book selection will be announced tomorrow.

Professional Development

(1) Are you planning on taking the copy-editing and/or the stylistic editing certification exam this November? Or do you want to start reviewing for the 2024 tests? Our study group meets weekly via Zoom to discuss a different part of the study guide content (2009 and 2016 versions).

The next meeting is on Thursday, October 6, 6:45–7:15 p.m., and will focus on part B of the copy-editing practice exam in the 2009 study guide. Everyone is welcome! If you’re interested in participating, please email Kim at kim@thinkstiletto.com and she will send you the Zoom link.

Post-NaNoWriMo: Writing Your Second Draft

It’s December. NaNoWriMo was a success, and you birthed your manuscript baby. Now what?

Join us for “Post-NaNoWriMo: Writing Your Second Draft,” a seminar with Maggie Morris, The Indie Editor, who will share practical tips and techniques for evaluating the first draft of your fiction manuscript so you can write your strongest second draft.

With plenty of examples from manuscripts she has edited, Maggie will discuss how she analyzes structure, plot, character, setting, pace, and theme. You don’t want to miss this one.

Maggie Morris is a lifelong student of language and literature with a bachelor of arts in French and German language and literature from the University of Toronto and a certificate in Publishing from Ryerson University.

As an professional editor, Maggie has edited literary and commercial fiction for adults and young adults, specifically in the following genres: urban fantasy, high fantasy, speculative fiction, science fiction, crime fiction, thriller, horror, and contemporary romance.

She is also an avid writer, and she is represented by the literary agent Rena Rossner of The Deborah Harris Agency. Her debut novel, a mystery written under the pen name Maggie Findlay, is currently on submission.

Plain Language for Editors: Join us for a lively and interactive workshop with Moira White

You’ve heard a lot about the importance of plain language in written materials, but what does plain language actually mean? Join us on October 27, 2020, to learn more about helping your clients reach their broadest audience. In this lively, hour-long session, Moira White will first explain what plain language involves and then demonstrate some of the plain language techniques and resources that every editor should have in their toolkit. Finally, she will leave time to share stories and answer members’ questions.

Each member who registers will receive a PDF containing resources, tips, and a plain-language checklist.

An hour-long, friendly discussion about our practical experiences with plain language will immediately follow the workshop.

Moira White is a versatile communicator with decades of experience in plain language editing, writing, and teaching for government and corporate clients. She teaches a number of highly acclaimed writing and editing courses in Ottawa and across Canada. Last year she taught close to 1,000 students. Since 2006, she has been president of Ottawa-based Ubiquitext Communications.

Moira holds a master’s degree in social policy. She thoroughly understands the public policy making process and plain language guidelines. She has extensive experience editing texts to produce clear, concise documents and helping clients find appropriate means of disseminating information. She has managed onsite production of reports in Canada and Europe; has travelled across Canada with public consultations writing, editing, and producing reports; and has synthesized the work of multiple authors and written executive summaries. She is an honorary life member and past president of Editors Canada and is a member of PLAIN (Plain Language Association InterNational).
