The KWG twig hosted a virtual book club meeting in March. We discussed Amy J. Schneider’s The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction and agreed that this is a great resource for fiction editors. Consider getting yourself a copy (if you haven’t already)!

A new version of Professional Editing Standards will be released on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. An advance copy is available on the national site by navigating to the 2023 AGM page (login required).

Welcome to our newest member: Lee Graham!

The KWG twig hosted two in-person social events in February: a coffee social and a dinner social. We had great attendance at both and had a wonderful time catching up with members!

Call for volunteers: Amanda’s term as co-chair of the KWG twig is coming to an end in June. We’re looking for a volunteer to co-chair for the 2024–2026 term. The new co-chair will get to work with Lloyd, who will be continuing in his role as co-chair through June 2025. Chairing is a great way to meet other editors and to learn more about Editors Canada. Members and student affiliates are welcome to volunteer! If you have any questions about this position, please reach out to kwg.twig@editors.ca.

You can now register for the 2024 Editors Canada conference, which will be June 21–23 in Vancouver.

Award nominations

The applications period for the 2024 Claudette Upton Scholarship is open until April 5. This annual national award of $1,000 recognizes a promising student affiliate from Editors Canada. If you’re a student affiliate, or if you know someone who should be, visit the Claudette Upton Scholarship page for more information.

The application period for the 2024 Equity Fellowship is open until April 5. This annual fellowship is designed to support editors who have traditionally been excluded by the publishing and editing industries, including editors who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour), 2SLGBTQIA+, neurodiverse and disabled. The 2024 Editors Canada conference will be in Vancouver, June 23–23. Registration opens in February, so keep an eye out for an email from the national office!

November Dinner Social

We’re hosting another opportunity to meet fellow editors and network this month: join us for our end-of-year dinner social on Wednesday, November 22 at La Cucina from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

The KWG twig is looking forward to an exciting November! We have two in-person socials planned for this month: a mid-month coffee meet-and-greet and our regular end-of-month dinner social, both in Kitchener.

These will be the last twig events for 2023. We hope to see you at one or both of them!

We’re hosting a meetup over coffee in downtown Kitchener next week, and everyone is welcome.

Welcome to our newest member: Shirley Rennie!

The KWG twig had an exciting September! On Sunday, September 10, we participated in the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival, where we had the chance to meet lots of authors, editors, and aspiring editors. Thank you to Jolanta, Judy, Maggie, Serenity, and Victoria for helping make this event a success!

We held our first in-person dinner social on Wednesday, September 27. It was great to reconnect with members and to meet new and prospective members!

  • Wednesday, October 25: Our online book club is back! We will meet via Zoom to discuss Toxic Feedback: Helping Writers Survive and Thrive by Joni B. Cole. We had a great turnout at the end-of-year social in June! We’ll be taking a break in July and August and starting things up again in September with Lloyd Winfield joining Amanda Feeney as co-chair.

  • Sunday, September 10: Eden Mills Writers Festival. The KWG twig has booked a table at the festival again this year, and we need some member volunteers to help us run it. The festival is a great place to meet authors and other editors (and to hand out business cards)! Volunteers will help run the table for an hour or two and then they’ll be free to spend the rest of the day enjoying the festival! The KWG twig held its AGM followed by a dinner social at Moxies in Kitchener in May. At this meeting, we announced next year’s twig co-chairs: Lloyd Winfield has volunteered to chair for the 2023–2025 term, and Amanda Feeney will stay on for one more year as his co-chair!

The June social will be held a week earlier than usual, on June 21. After this end-of-year social, the twig will be taking a break for the summer and coming back together in September!

  • Wednesday, June 21: End-of-year dinner social! Join us at Beertown in Waterloo. RSVP to kwg.twig@editors.ca by June 19.
  • Sunday, September 10: Eden Mills Writers Festival. The KWG twig is planning to book a table at the festival again this year, and we’ll be looking for some member volunteers to help up run it.
